Despite serious difficulties faced by the light industry in the period of economic and system changes that took place in the 80s and the 90s of the 20th century, ŁódĽ as the main centre of the ŁódĽ Industrial District has retained its position as the largest centre of textile industry in Poland. There are a few thousand clothing companies active in the city, and many of them display brands well known and highly esteemed in Poland and all over the world.
The vicinity of clothing markets in Tuszyn and Głuchów and the Ptak market, the largest ones not only in Poland but also in Europe, supplying shops and wholesalers all over Poland and from the neighbouring countries, is also of importance. The substantial asset of ŁódĽ is its central location, at the crossroads of most important international routes.
The specific historical development of the city is reflected in its characteristic buildings, and endows ŁódĽ with unique climate. Medieval, renaissance or baroque buildings are not to be found here. But such an excellent mixture of neo-styles - especially art nouveau - is impossible to find in any other Polish town. Visiting the Promised Land you should find time to walk along the Piotrkowska street, visit at least a few art nouveau monuments like the Poznański Palace, the Geyer White Factory or the Księży Młyn residence.
